On March 25th 1963, The Beatles spent the day being photographed in different locations around Liverpool, including Horne Brothers' famous barber shop in Lord Street, The Cavern and at Paul's house in Forthlin Road. The photographer was Hungarian Dezo Hoffman. The barber pictured is Jim Cannon. I have recently been informed by family of Jim, that he was not one for the limelight, and later turned down The Beatles offer to be their personal barber on their world travels. This day resulted in some images which are now known around the world, and also saw The Beatle haircut adopted by all four, with Ringo finally exchanging his 1950's style for the iconic "moptop".

The Beatles had originally sported the "DA" hairstyle made famous by Tony Curtis, but by 1963 had been influenced by their artist friends in Hamburg to adopt their "moptop" cuts.

Horne Brothers was the barber shop frequented by Brian Epstein before the photo shoot, and remained the barbers that The Beatles would use for several years after. As well as The Beatles, many stars that were appearing at The Empire and other theatres would also visit Horne Brothers'.

Horne Brothers' barbers has long since gone, but according to Bonhams of Knightsbridge there were three chairs in existence. The chair you see at the top of the page is one of those chairs. Made in Chicago in the 1920s, it was shipped over to Horne Brothers directly, and has featured in national and local press.
